Timeline of Humanity
Late Postmodern Age
" …and so we come to the Postmodern age. An age many consider the age of decadence and decline and thus the ending cycle of the western empire, as one might call it. The age lasted about 100 years beginning from the end of World War II and ending in World War III. "
-Professor Edward Kassar, University of Xu-2
2016 – Terrestial Planet Finder Project gets reinstated and begins to build Kepler II. Equipped with the latest technology and optics, Kepler II is launched to orbit the sun with the first Kepler. Kepler II focuses on searching exoplanets from the Sagittarius constellation, therefore replacing the Hubble Space Telescope.
2018 – Kepler II locates an exoplanet roughly the size of Earth 42 light-years away in Sagittarius constellation. Sensational head lines fill the news papers as further calculations of the “Wow!” signal, received by SETI in 1977, reveal that the newly found planet is, with a 67,3% probability, the source of the signal. The planet gets named after the signal, planet Wow.
2020 – A super resistant bird flu breaks out in China. A remedy is quickly invented, but due to it’s costly and slow production, distribution is restricted to citizens under the age of 50. Within a year 95% of China’s population over the age of 60 perish in the pandemic. The sudden appearance and the restriction of treatment arouse speculations about the origins of the disease. The change in China’s population pyramid give way to a youth bulge, and the previously struggling economy of China rises to become the most influential economy on Earth.
2021 – China begins a massive space program that is funded with the excess budget produced by massive cuts on health and elder care. China publishes very little of the intents of their space program and maintains a high secrecy around it.
2024 – The European Union crumbles as animosity and nationalism increases in Europe. The military budgets, that were cut to minimum during the 2010s, get substantial increases. The military industries of the United States and China compete on the increasing market in Europe.
2025 – China’s collaboration with CERN produce the first prototype of the Lee’s ring, a device that substantially eases the stable capture of antimatter from a particle collider. A dispute arises when the Chinese team of scientists refuse to share their research data with their European colleagues. China withdraws from the project with CERN and begins their own particle collider project. Despite many diplomatic approaches, China refuses to share the essential information on the construction of the Lee’s ring
2026 – China begins a massive project to collect and store antimatter. Even with the help of Lee’s ring, the production of antimatter turns out to be immensively expensive, and the energy consumption of China rises to astronomical levels. The huge emissions of China make the efforts to reduce the ever growing green house effect a futile cause.
The Chinese space program begins to transport large amounts of construction equipment and resources to the moon. Chinese officials announce that China will build a space station on the moon. The space station is named Xu-1.
2027 – Violent storms reign in North America, Europe, and Southeast Asia damaging infrastructure and killing tens of thousands. The rising sea level renders vast areas inhabitable. The central Venice submerges and becomes a popular diving site. The western countries combine their strengths against China and demand it to reduce it’s emissions through an economic blockade.
The growth of China’s economy ceases and starts it’s plunge down as the world trade boycotts Chinese products. A new economic super power emerges to fill in the economic vacuum left by China from the newly united Latin American Federation, formed from the countries of South America.
2030 – Plunging towards an economic disaster, China uses it’s dwindling resources self-destructively. Near the end of the year China reveals it’s intents. At it’s moon station Xu-1, China has constructed a massive space vessel, Shenzhou X, that is capable of accelerating to very high speeds. Using an antimatter catalyzed nuclear pulse propulsion engine, Shenzhou X is the most advanced technological construction of it’s time. China announces it’s plans to launch Shenzhou X on a voyage to the planet Wow within the next year. It is estimated that the voyage would take Shenzhou X 115 Earth years, but due to time dilation the voyage for the passengers would only seem like 8 years.
2031 – Shenzhou X is launched from the moon. 200 Chinese politicians and members of the elite, together with 100 taikonauts and scientists, begin their journey. Shenzhou X is loaded with a huge Chinese gene bank, cloning equipment and 10 000 fertile human embryos stored in artificial wombs. The communist party of China celebrates the migration of communism to space with the hopes of creating an ideal world far away.
2034 – The northern parts of Africa suffer from a severe drought for three consecutive years. Due to increasing erosion, the Sahara spreads and reaches the southern shores of the Mediterranean Sea. The hordes of refugees trying to enter Europe are violently turned back. Many of the South European countries build border walls on their Mediterranean shores.
2035 – Suffering from a recession, the United States and Canada unite under one flag to increase their competitiveness against the Latin American Federation. The union is known as the United Nations of America.
2040 – As the mutual threat of China diminishes, the stability and alliance between the natianalistic European countries start to break away. An elitistic trend of nationalism spreads from France to rest of the Europe. The trend bears an idea that the downfall of Europe’s economy was caused by the immigration waves of the 2000s and 2010s. Inspired by the ideology, the first concentration camps are built in England.
2043 – The world exchange is in chaos as the oil price rockets to UNA$1000.00 a barrel. Experts agree on the fact that, due to its ludicrous price, oil has become an obsolete source of power.
2045 – The 3rd World War starts. After prolonged tensions, the Latin American Federation begins it’s full scale assault against the United Nations of America aiming to seize control of the rich natural gas field in Alaska. The war soon spreads to Europe when Great Britain decides to increase their influence together with France. Great Britain, France, and the Latin American Federation form a pact and divide the Atlantic Ocean in to their sectors. France begins it’s expansion by invading Spain and soon moves towards Germany. Great Britain quickly invades most of Scandinavia.
The Progressive Age
" The Progressive Age should not to be mistaken for the Progressive Era of the United States, that occured between the 1890s and the 1920s, even though they do have a slight resemblance. I personally find the Progressive Age to be the most inspiring. After a devastating war, humans saw best to stick together and embrace intellect. Huge scientific discoveries were made and the global union of the human race grew closer. "
-Professor Edward Kassar, University of Xu-2
2051 – The long and expensive war comes to an end soon after the Latin American Federation declares war against China. China, a country that had made great efforts to maintain a neutral status and stay out of the devastating war, restarts one of its forgotten side projects of their space program. Ten antimatter fusion bombs are launched from the Xu-1 space station. Due to the small size of these missiles, only three of them get deflected by missile shield programs. Immensely large explosions paralyze the axis of Great Britain, France, and the Latin American Federation as they demolish their capital cities and key industrial locations. By the end of the year, the last peace treaty gets signed and the invaded areas are returned to their original owners.
A long era of peace and rebuilding begins. The problems of democracy and capitalism are publicly discussed thoroughly as respected researchers and authors publish writings, that see them as the reasons behind World War III. These discussions provide ratifications for changes in the administrative structures of countries and restrictions on some civil rights. A prominent trend arises that emphasize rights as something one must earn and the importances of civic duties increase.
A popular slogan, “Stop stupid wars! Stop stupid votes”, spreads from Great Britain and inspires nations to restrict the right to vote with such prerequisites as IQ test levels and mental stability tests. To balance equality, schooling of any kind is declared a free right, so that everyone has the theoretical possibility to acquire the right to vote. Very soon, every advanced country embraces these regulations.
2062 – The first stable hydrogen fusion power plant is built in North America. Within five years every advanced country has their own hydrogen fusion program.
2067 – China shares it’s research data from its space program and the Lee’s ring.
2068 – A new international space programs start at the Xu-1 space station focusing on the closer examination of our own solar system.
2070 – The first manned flight to Mars is made. The Trip takes 15 days and the construction of Xu-2 begins on Mars.
2073 – The last power plant, producing green house emissions, is closed as hydrogen fusion and orbital solar plants replace obsolete power sources. Considerable efforts are made to stabilize Earth’s climate and estimates say that within 200 years the climate should return to what it used to be in the early 19th century. Vast areas remain deserted and unhabitable due to the accelerated desertification and radiation from the antimatter fusion bombs.
2079 – CERN begins to operate again with increased funding and builds a more advanced particle collider with three Lee’s rings. Yet again, the production of antimatter proves out to be extremely expensive. However the possibility to produce emission free energy easens the process.
2085 – Multiple research probes and spacecrafts are launched from Xu-1 to investigate the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
2092 – The Libertine VII research ship discovers a remnant of an ancient construction in the asteroid belt. Immediate plans are made on Earth to investigate and transfer the relic to Xu-2 space station.
2097 – A group of the world’s most wealthy and influential businessmen execute a delicately deviced plan they call the market economy’s fusion takeover. With precise stock investments and secret cooperation, they gather the control over the majority of the world’s leading companies and organize massive corporate fusions. In the end, the leadership of these super companies and corporations gain so much power, that even the administrative organs of countries have to obey the group of businessmen calling themselves the World’s Market Council.
2100 – The Libertine Coil is believed to produce a super strong magnetic field. Scientists speculate that the coil must have been part of a colossal rail cannon.
2101 – The construction of six functioning replicas of the Libertine Coil begins at Xu-2 space station. Essential and rare metals are mined from the asteroid belt and brought to Mars. Even though the real purpose of these coils remain a mystery, the project gets a huge support and funding from the World’s Market Counsil.
2115 – The production of the six Libertine Coils is finished and they are placed as a one structure to orbit around Mars. Speculations of its purpose as a launcher for spacecrafts is wrecked, as all test shots end in the demolishion of the craft. The space program is criticised so vigorously that its funding is reduced to a tenth of what it used to be.
2125 – CERN spreads its activity and builds a new more advanced particle collider with ten Lee’s rings to Xu-1. Four of these are new prototype models that are designed to capture even heavier antimatter atoms. To power the space station and the collider, five hydrogen fusion plants are built on Xu-1. The project takes three years to complete and during that time the population of the Moon rises to 10.000.
2135 – A break-through is made at the physics labs in Xu-1 as the research team manages to make a dimensional distortion bubble using superconductive antimatter atoms in a vacuum. In vacuum the superconductive bubble and everything inside it vanish, and reappear when the superconductivity breaks as the bubble warms up. Further research reveal that even though the bubble does not exist in any visible dimension, its relative position in the visible dimension can be altered with the push of magnetic fields. Even more astonishing is the fact that the movement of this position is not limited by the relativistic laws that limit speed to the speed of light. This solves the puzzle with the Libertine Coil as, after all, it proves out to be a part of a FTL travel launcher.
2137 – A severe depression hits the global economy and nearly halts the space program. The World’s Market Counsil increases its influence as several countries turn towards their help. The extensive outsourcings of national infrastructures practically outsource the administrative power to private super companies, and thus to the World’s Market Counsil.
2143 – The depression easens and the global economy stabilizes. Due to the administrative changes made during the depression, the leadership of humanity is more centralized, than during any recorded era. Borders and national identities begin to fade as globalization unites the world. The few nationalistic protests, claiming that the depression was deviced by the World’s Market Council, are silently suppressed.
2144 – The international space program is restarted and Operation Libertine X commences.
2152 – Operation Libertine X begins mass production and a fleet, consisting 30 massive space arks, is built on the orbit of Mars. Each space ark carries the building components for one Libertine Coil. From the old research data from Kepler I, five star systems, containing earth-sized planets on their habitable zone, get chosen as the objectives for Operation Libertine X.
The Postprogressive Age
" …when people must have amazed at the huge reformations made during the Progressive Age, one could not fully prepare themselves for the events that came with the ability to travel to the stars. Due to this significant discovery, scholars count this the main event in the transition from the Progressive Age to Postprogressive Age. "
-Professor Edward Kassar, University of Xu-2
2154 – Humanity prepares for the great jump towards the unknown and launches six space arks to each of the objective star systems. Each space ark is surrounded by a dimensional distortion bubble that gets launched through the Libertine Coiled rail cannon. The World’s Market Council, along with the nations of the world, decide to form an alliance to represent humanity as one. This alliance is named the Human Union.
2155 – Only one of the expeditions return to tell that the trip was succesful. The expedition finds a habitable garden planet without sentient life, and builds the first human colony outside our solar system. The colony is named the Union Pride.
A new problem with FTL travel is found as test results show that if the dimensional distortion bubble opens in a location that isn’t a perfect vacuum, but contains matter, the reappearing matter inside the bubble merges with the matter on the new location. This fact produced only little problems for the expedition that was succesful, but the new knowledge on the mechanics of the DDB arouse speculations on the fate of the other expeditions.
2156 – Union Pride builds a vacuum gate to allow safe arrival to its destination. The vacuum gate is placed to orbit around the Union Pride. A similar gate is built inside our own solar system as well. The migration to Union Pride increases.
2157 – One of the space arks from a lost expedition returns. With them they bring a quantum entangled atom communicator given to the by a technologically advanced alien race called the Byrids. The device allows the possibility for undelaid communication through the data center of the Byrids and safer FTL travel as the FTL launchers and vacuum gates gain direct contact to each other.
The expeditionists tell that three of their six space arks were destroyed or vanished as their DDBs opened inside an asteroid cloud. It took five years for the remaining expedition to build the missing Libertine Coils to build a working FTL launcher. During these five years, they built a colony called Epsilon I on an ocean world lacking free oxygen in its atmosphere. A year before the expeditionists finished the FTL launcher, they were contacted by a Byridian war ship. Negotiations were made between the expeditionists and the Byrids and two FTL communicators are given as a gift. In exchange for the gift the expeditionists promise to escort one Byridian embassador to Earth.
2158 – The World’s Market Council renames itself the Earth Council and makes a deal with the Byrids. In exchange for fifty FTL communicators, the Earth Council promises to help the Byrids in their war against the Dugats. Humanity begins to build a massive space army.
2160 – Two of the lost expeditions send messengers back to Earth. It turns out that, just like the expedition that found the Byrids, they had lost most of their arks. The fifth expedition never returns.
2162 – The Project Peacock begins.
2168 – Humanity is releaved from its duty to participate in the war against the Dugats and focuses on expanding its regime. To drive humanity’s interests, the Human Union sends an ambassador to the Galactic Alliance only to find itself already represented in the Galactic Alliance Council. The descendants of the Shenzhou X have managed to build a considerable network of colonies and gain the ambassadors seat at the Galactic Alliance Council. Due to the arrival of the Human Union, the Counsil temporarily suspends the human Council Ambassador until humanity can unify its political agendas. The suspension is explained with the rule of one Council Ambassador per race that cannot be shared.
The leaders of the Shenzhou are infuriated of the sudden appearance of the Human Union and the suspension of their Ambassador. Shenzhou refuses to negotiate with the upstart humans and withdraw to their colonies in Shenzhou Main Space.
2169 – The Galactic Alliance grants dozens of new star systems for the Human Union to colonize. The Galactic Alliance Council decide that the requests for new colonies by the Shenzhou will be rejected until the Human Union has accumulated an equivalent amount of colonies.
2180 – The Human Union expands very quickly and catches up with the amount of colonies by the Shenzhou. The Galactic Alliance Council begins to grant new star systems for the Shenzhou as well, but the amount is much reduced for both of the human factions.
2182 – A star system called Falon-12 is given to the Human Union, but it’s only habitable world, Tarkus, turns out to be largely inhabited by the Dugats. A bloody war begins as the Human Union tries to conquer the world and destroy the Dugat colonies.
2190 – Another similar system Falon-22 is also found out to be ridden by Dugats. After a short effort to purge the planet it is abandoned due to its limited economical value. A small rebellous infantry battallion stays behind and sets out a small colony on Falon-22’s only habitable planet Yellowstone. The colony grows slowly as desperate runaways and refugees flee to the deserted planet.
2199 – The Human Union Interstellar Navy purges the last continent on Tarkus, but the now conquered planet is in ruins. It becomes a staging point for the Human Union Interstellar Navy and a training ground for its soldiers. Occasional Dugat attacks still occure in the system as many of its more desolate worlds still bear small Dugat colonies.
2202 – Union Pride, the first human colony in space, tries to break away from the Human Union and declares itself an independent colony. A strict note is given by the Human Union that if Union Pride won’t retract its intentions, it will face grave consequences. Despite the threats of the Human Union, Union Pride holds on to its plans and announces that it intends to carry on as an independent world. Very soon the connection of Union Prides FTL communicator stops working. The common belief is that Union Pride cuts of its own connection and waits for the consequences.
A month after the communication break, a war fleet of the Human Union is sent to lay siege on [Union Pride]]. When the fleet arrives, it finds an obliterated world. During the communication cut, Union Pride had destroyed itself by launching dozens of massive nuclear warheads on its settlements. The self-destruction of the colony is so extensive that the reasons behind it remain a mystery.
2223 – An anti-human terrorist organisation, HFG, destroys a human space station, Colossus I, in the Reagan star system. The multi-species group infiltrates the station and ignites a destructive meltdown in the antimatter engines within the station core. 50.000 people perish as the station breaks into pieces from the explosion. Political conflict is avoided as the Galactic Alliance Council promises to investigate and prosecute the terrorists.
The Galactic Age
" When the Shenzhou enslaved the Kre’paths of Wow, they saw attributes in their gene codes that they wished to posses. It was this greed that drove them to violate the rules of the galactic community. Some might say that we should thank the Kre’paths for the eviction of the Shenzhou for without them, we would not have an ambassador in the Galactic Alliance Council. "
-Professor Edward Kassar, University of Xu-2
2241 – The Galactic Police of the Galactic Alliance execute a raid on one of the research centers of the Shenzhou and find evidence on violations of the Genetic Manipulation Laws set by the Galactic Alliance Council. Shenzhou is evicted from the galactic community and the disputed place of the human Council Ambassador opens for the Human Union.
2243 – The first colonies are founded in the new Human Union territory, Human Union Northern Space. Human Union confronts the armies of the Varadoon separatist faction Uuthilg Shee Pack. For additional info: Northern Space War.
2248 – The anti-human terrorist organisation, HFG, assassinates the human Council Ambassador. A new ambassador is chosen and the security protocols of the ambassador are enhanced. The new ambassador persuades the Galactic Police to deal with the ever increasing terrorist actions.
2249 – A rogue colony is detected in Human Union Northern Space on a previously uninhabited star system. The rogue colony, Jefferson, had been secretly expanding itself ever since the first colonies were founded in Human Union Northern Space. As Jefferson refuses to submit to the rule of Human Union, the Union sends a strike force fleet to bring the colony to its knees. The rogue colony refuses to surrender and thus the war lasts for two years and during it Jefferson is turned into a barren wasteland where isolated and starving colonies struggle for survival. A galactic media company T-Net Entertainment turns the planet into a VR hunting ground where heavily armed mech drones prey on the former insurgents. Additional info: Jefferson Insurgency.
2261 – The attention from the terrorist attacks is temporarily shifted to Falon-11, a binary star system with two habitable worlds, where a border skirmish with the Shenzhou bursts in the star system, as both factions have a colony in it. A short but violent war is fought between the two human factions. The war ends in a truce. Additional info: Falon-11 Border War.
2261 – A power circuit accident in T-Net, a young colony in Human Union Northern Space, devastates one of its Neuro-Community spires. An estimate of 20.000 anonymous habitants die, fall into coma or turn mad. Some survivors remain locked inside the spire. T-Net Entertainment Corporation intstitutes a lockdown on the spire and all access into the spire becomes illegal according to planetary laws.
2262 – The Human Union Interstellar Navy begins a vast continental takeover operation against Dugats and Dugoids on Falon-27, a star system once ruled by the ancient Lashathi civilisation. Orbital bombardment on Falon-27‘s habitable world, Fal’goran Grove, is prohibited due to the cultural and scientific importance of the city ruins there. Human Union Interstellar Navy manages to gain a foothold on one of Fal’goran Grove‘s continents, but progress soon slows down. The battles still continue. Additional info: Operation Fal’goran Grove.
2264 – Now
